Drooping of upper eyelids is very common and is as much a function of heredity (our genes) as it is of aging. Just look at a family photo album. It’s amazing that such a small area of the face projects the most visible sign of our appearance, energy level and mood.

Loss of skin elasticity and a "pooching" of fat compartments from the orbits (boney housing of the eye) can cause a tired aged look. This "eyelid fat" will not change with dieting and is not related to weight gain or loss; furthermore, the fatigued appearance with be increase by a loosening of the canthal tendons (inner and outer corners of the eyes), which causes a sad look.

These conditions are addressed during the blepharoplasty procedure which is performed on an outpatient basis in the safety and security of our own federally approved ambulatory surgery center. Many of our patients opt for light intravenous sedation analogous to what patients receive during diagnostic colonoscopy or dental procedures. Patients are breathing on their own without the support of a machine. Patients receiving sedation are cleared by their family practice physicians, the sedation being administered by the Sibley/Johns Hopkins anesthesia group.

Upper Eyelid Surgery | Blepharoplasty Bethesda MD

For shorter eyelid procedures, some patients will opt for a local anesthetic with just a numbing injection to the eyelids. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can often be completed in less than an hour, with patients returning to driving and desk work in just a few days.

The upper eyelid surgery is can be combined with lower eyelid surgery as well as midface and/or lower facial rejuvenation.
